![]() ![]() But once she married on Krypton, she would have lost her connection to her father's house and become a member of the House of El. Under Kryptonian naming protocols, she would have been named Lois of the House of Lane or Lois Lane. After marriage they are not expected to take on their husband's name and are known by their first name only. Most depictions of Kryptonian culture show that females use their father's full name as their last names before marriage, and then are known simply by their first names after marriage.īut even if she had been able to be ON Krypton, the best she could have hoped for was the loss of her family name once she married Kal of the House of El (Kal-El, son of Jor-El). Lara Lor-Van is Lara's full maiden name, as "Lor-Van" is the name of Lara's father. Lara is the biological mother of Superman, and the wife of scientist Jor-El. Lara (née Lara Lor-Van) is a fictional character who appears in Superman comics published by DC Comics. (Smallville splits the difference and calls her Lara-El directly.) Thought I cannot see the difference between Lara of the House of El and the shorthand of Lara-El. Little work has been done to flesh out the naming conventions of Kryptonians, the most accepted naming protocol says women take on the names of their fathers while they are unmarried. Lois would have indeed been a member of the House of El, if there had been such a house to claim since Krypton was destroyed. She was easily able to subdue the soldiers and near its conclusion Superman showed up.As much as it pains me to say it, the Kryptonians are a bit chauvinistic and patriarchal as far as their family naming conventions are concerned. It was at this moment that she realized she had an impressive set of superpowers. When she was unable to answer their questions, they began to use force to restrain her. Moments after her crash landing, a group of Russian soldiers arrived and began to question Kara. Even her mother was unable to help her and Zor -El launched the pod into space.Īfter orbiting the Sun for years, Kara arrived on Earth in Russia. Kara pleaded that she didn’t want to go but Zor-El ignored her. What she didn’t realize was that Zor-El had equipped the armor with a device that would render her unconscious moments after putting it on.Īs she began to lose consciousness, Zor-El placed her into the pod. She reached into the pod and quickly put the Battle Armor on. When she arrived to receive it, he told her that the gift was in the pod. Zor-El convinced her that he had a present (Kryptonian Battle Armor) for her in recognition of her trials. Any who passed them would be considered a full adult in the eyes of all Kryptonians. These trials were designed to act as a bridge between adolescence and adulthood. Kara was almost of age on Krypton and because of this, she was set to undergo a series of trials. His hope was that by orbiting the Sun, Kara would be A) super powered when she awoke and B) able to defend herself from anything that may have awoken her. Once the pod was complete, he programmed it to orbit the Sun. As such, he designed and built a pod similar to the one Cal-El was placed in. Although he had a reasonable amount of faith that the devices would work, he wasn’t willing to risk the life of his daughter should they not. Zor-El planned to save all of Argo City (his city on Krypton) by using devices of his own design disguised as power generators. Kara is the daughter of Zor-El and Alura In-Zee and like her famous cousin, Cal-El, she comes from the planet Krypton.Īs the brother of Jor-El, Zor-El had early knowledge that Krypton was a doomed planet. She was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino. Supergirl first appeared in Action Comics #252 back in 1959. The origin of Supergirl is pretty straightforward.
